Kansas City, Kan. ? A.J. Allmendinger will be on the pole for the second time in his Sprint Cup career after turning the fastest qualifying lap for Sunday?s race at Kansas Speedway.
Allmendinger posted a lap of 175.993 mph in his Penske Racing Dodge to claim the top spot ahead of Kevin Harvick and Joey Logano, who had led the fastest times most of the day.
It was the first pole for Allmendinger since 2010 at Phoenix.

Fontana, Calif. ? When dark clouds ominously obscured majestic Mount Baldy north of Auto Club Speedway early in Sunday?s race, NASCAR?s drivers all realized they were probably in for a short day on a long track.
Nobody did a better job racing until the raindrops fell than Tony Stewart.
Stewart got his second NASCAR victory of the season when rain shortened the race at Auto Club Speedway by 71 laps, extending the defending Sprint Cup champion?s unusually strong start.

Las Vegas ? Asked about not winning a race in a year, Carl Edwards had a quick correction.
?I did win the All-Star race, so that?s something,? he said.
True, Edwards did win the All-Star race in May, pretty handily. Earned $1 million for it, too.
The problem with that victory was that it didn?t count in the season standings. To find a race that earned him points, Edwards has to go back to last March, when he kicked off his championship chase with a win at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Bristol, Tenn. ? If Kurt Busch had any doubt he?s stuck in a run of bad luck, it was probably confirmed when he hit a bird in one of the final practices for the Daytona 500.
?It was like hitting a six-pound bowling ball,? he grimaced Saturday.
Alas, there was more to come for Busch, who suffered through a horrendous SpeedWeeks at Daytona.
He was wrecked in practice for the exhibition opening race, and his new Phoenix Racing team had to thrash to put a seat in his backup car. The backup was then ...
